Specifications of Medtronic MiniMed Paradigm Real-Time
|
| |
For years many diabetics have been dreaming of a combination of continuous blood glucose monitoring and pump therapy. The MiniMed Paradigm Real-Time concept is a first step into that direction. The Paradigm pump has been advanced. In addition to a few improvements of statistics and of the Bolus Wizard, the Paradigm 522 and 722 have the advantage that they can import and display information from a continuous glucose sensor. So the system indicates suggested corrections on the basis of the current blood glucose value.
Reading the pump out, thus, provides the opportunity to check all relevant data at a glance, except for the bread exchange number. Since there have already been problems with German health insurance companies not covering Guardian sensors, it is to be expected that a permanent use of this combined system will be rare. The Real-Time series provides the opportunity though.
An alternative solution is the transfer of data from ordinary blood glucose measuring devices. In the USA, for instance, LifeScan developed a device which will send data to the Paradigm pump automatically. In Germany, the measuring device Contour by Bayer Ascensia does the same.
