Children’s basal rate
|
| |
An adult’s basal rate changes because of physical activity, the weight and other
influences on the metabolism. Of course all this applies to your child as well, only all
factors mentioned change more drastically. Thus, the child’s basal rate changes – in
the course of physical development – in a quantitative and temporal sense, i.e. the
basal rate can for instance rise from a range of 0,05 to 0,15 units of insulin(UI) /hour
at age 2 up to 1,5 UI/ hour at age 18. The graph showing the insulin consumption
differs individually: thus, the level of insulin consumption of little children reaches its
highest point in the evening whereas this point shifts to the morning usually from the
age of 6 upwards; still the lowest point falls into lunchtime. This shift is the reason
why children from 6 to 7 years upwards using the injection therapy have to get up
early in the morning in order to avoid hyperglycemia. That is why it is said that with
an insulin pump your sleep is undisturbed. In order not to put the course of the
therapy at risk because of an unnoticed change of the basal rate, you should the rate
have tested regularly by arrangement with your diabetologist. You can find a
recommendation in our download list.
