Different kinds of Pens: the standard one, the semi-automatic one, the fully-automatic one and the special one...which of them to use?

The Pen is a little instrument that has been developed for people who have diabetes, for instance, and thus are forced to get their injection regularly. These Pens are useful in order to make this self-therapy easier. Within the years, many different kinds of Pens have been produced according to the needed functions.

The standard Pen

This Pens has the rudimentary function of a syringe. It consists of an interchangeable ampoule with a usual volume of 3ml; of a canule that also has to be changed from time to time; and of a dose appliance which is mostly a knob. The canule has to be injected into the skin and by operating the knob, the needed amount of insulin will be emitted.

Semi-automatic Pens

Although standard Pens are helpful instruments for insulin-dependent diabetics, there are visually and physically handicapped people who depend on semi- and fully-automatic Pens. By confirming the dose at the semi-automatic Pen (accompanied with a klicking noise), a certain mechanism is ready to be activated by a little slide only.

Fully-automatic Pens

The one who is afraid of injecting the canule into the skin on his own, can use the fully-automatic Pens that push the needle into the skin mechanically and emit the insulin.

Special Pens

These Pens have been developed for children, since they always need less insulin than adults. Similarily to an insulin pump, it is possible to inject insulin in steps of 0,5 IU in comparison to a standard Pen with steps of 1 or 2 IUs. Moreover, there are Pens that show whether the whole amount of insulin has already been injected which can be very helpful in case of bigger amounts of insulin.

One-use Pens

For People who have problems to change the cartridge, one-use Pens are advisable. If the insulin amount is used up, the Pen has to be disposed. It is also possible to confirm the dose of insulin which will then be emitted in every injection. This function is especially helpful for people who are in big need of care.
