Minimed Glucose-Sensor CGMS or How should a continual blood sugar measurement look like?

Possible for the first time: blood sugar measurement that lasts 72 hours continually

How does the Minimed Glucose-Sensor CGMS work? The system consists of 4 components. First, there is the sensor that is enveloped by a micro electrode and consists of a slim shift of glucose oxidase. The sensor constantly transforms glucose in an electronical signal that is proportional to the actual concentration of glucose. After 72 hours and 288 glucose measurements, the sensor must be replaced.
The display is supposed to be the second component. It serves for operating activities and to collect data. The display is able to store data up to two weeks. Which data? - Every ten seconds, the sensor sends a result of measuring to the display. The display then makes up a mean value of five minutes which then falls into the statistic. Moreover, meals; details about medecins; or movements can be stored over the enter key. Since the display is not water resistant, the patient is not allowed to take a bath or to go into the sauna. For taking a shower, there are special bags ("Shower Pak"). The third component is the com-station. Since the patient returns to the medecine after about tree days, the data has to be put on a pc somehow. Therefore, the data will be read at the com-station.

With the help of the software, which is component number four, one can analyse the data in a clearly arranged manner. The "Gold System" from CGMS and its plenimetry AUC make it possible to realize connections more clearly. Thus, the system has advantages to uncover
  • unexplored hypoglycemies
  • and hyperglycemies
that can under certain circumstances be recognized by an increased HbA1c.

Finally, some technical data: (summary of the measured values)
  • average deviation between sensor and a blood sugar value: 5,4 mg/dl
  • amount of glucose: 40 - 400 mg/ dl
  • length of cable: 91,4 cm
  • data transformation: infrarot

Continuous blood sugar measurement in order to rate hypoglycemia in type 1- diabetes
