The connection between hypofunction of the thyroid gland and diabetes
|
| |
A defect of the thyroid gland always affects the diabetes therapy. Probably for
genetic reasons, type 1 diabetics are three to five times more likely to suffer from a
thyroid gland hypofunction, in medicine called autoimmune thyroiditis. For a
connection between type 2 diabetes and this autoimmune reaction there is no proof
at the moment. Concerning the sex, it has been found out that women are five to ten
times more prone to suffer from the hypofunction than men. But which effects does a
hyperactivity have on diabetes?
In general, it can be said that it causes the blood sugar values to rise. Strictly
speaking the patient becomes more resistant to insulin (also true for type 1 diabetics)
And his body produces more glucagons [note: glucagons is the “counter-hormone” to
insulin, thus causing the blood sugar level (bsl) to rise. A hypofunction has the
opposite effect: diabetics are prone to suffer from hypoglycemia which can also
change the bsl drastically. In order not to realize a hypofunction only because of a
disordered diabetes, it is recommended to have done a corresponding inspection
once a year.
Both, a hypofunction and a hyperactivity can be treated easily so that the bsl
comes back to normal again.
