Type 2 diabetics - afraid of the syringe
|
| |
In many cases people suffering from type 2 diabetes are afraid of the changeover from oral antidiabetics to insulin. The main reason is the syringe or the pen.
Where might be the reasons for this?
Surveys among patients in the diabetic centre in Mergentheim showed that it is not the fear of needles that is causing the negative attitude towards an insulin therapy. Yet, anxiety about pointy and sharp objects, including syringes, is a natural reflex to protect the body.
Which reasons are there against the insulin therapy?
There can be various reasons: First of all, ignorance leads to uncertainty. Moreover, it is commonly assumed that the insulin therapy is the worst stage when having diabetes. It happens quiet often that type 2 diabetics who inject insulin are mistaken for type 1 diabetics. Linked with the "worst stage of diabetes" is the anxiety about after- and side-effects of the insulin therapy. Those effects can be hypoglycemia and that the patient puts on weight.
These considerations can only be met with conversations. The schooling on diabetes is a good opportunity for such topics. One of the most important principles is the following saying: The proof of the pudding is the eating.
Just as type 1 diabetics have the chance to check their attitude towards insulin pumps by using it, type 2 diabetics can do so with the insulin therapy.
