Different basal rates
|
| |
Everyone who has got an insulin pump, knows the conversion table between ICT and pump therapy. Some also know the question mark, if this table isn´t applicable to 100 per cent, or the regulation of the pump simply doesn´t work and it stalls itselfs week for week. This problem is subject of a survey, that goes into the matter if there are systematical differences in the basal rates patterns of children and teenager.
The Database of the children- diabetologists from austria and germany functions as the primarily data source. So the rates of 1248 diabetics – aged from less months until 18 years – were collected. Additionally 64 patients were observed, how the “Basalrate” changed during the time of the analysis.
There was found a classification of 7 various “Basalraten”patterns. Over 700 patients – average age 14,9 years – had the Dawn-dusk-pattern. That means they have had the highest insulin rate at 5 a.m.. Another award was, that the age plays a big role at the pattern of basal rates. The younger the children, the earlier delayed the nocturnal lowering of the rate in the morning. That is something that the diabetologist has to care for when he/she adjusts the child or the teenager.
