What can I do if I have got the impression that my blood glucose meter does not display the correct figures?
|

The official accuracy of a device is not necessarily the real accuracy. Though producer claim something different, tests in a laboratory showed that the tolerance lies between 20 to 25 %. Yet, in the last years there has been made great progress on the field of measuring technology which allows us to trust blood glucose meters.
But what if you still think: Somehow the figures cannot be correct?
We summarized some advice which might be helpful for you in such a situation.
- First of all check whether you really followed the Rules concerning the measurement of the blood glucose. If not repeat the measurement.
- Do not blindly trust the blood glucose meter. If the machine displays a serious hypoglycaemia (1 - 2,5 mmol/l) but you do not feel any symptoms of this, repeat the measurement. If your figures are around 3 mmol/l you might not notice the slight hypoglycaemia. In this cases you should trust the machine and react accordingly.
- If your blood glucose metre can be switched from displaying mmol/l to mg/dl, make sure which unit you are shown. But it is difficult to mix them up because 10 mmol/l is a quite high figure whereas 10 mg/dl means you are actually dead.
- You can check your machine with a control solution or a control measure strip (e.g. included in the Bayer XL). The result that should be displayed can be found in the handbook or on the packaging.
- Take your blood glucose metre to the doctor and compare its results to those of the doctor.
