When diabetes affects the bladder
|
| |
The specific term for this complication is “diabetic cystitis” and describes the
phenomenon generally called “bladder trouble”. “Almost every other patient
suffering from diabetes develops a disordered bladder function in the course of
their disease,” says university professor Dr. med. Helmut Madersbacher from
Innsbruck. Unfortunately, the disease is often discovered much too late so that
infections of the urinary tract and incontinence can only be diagnosed and treated
(but cannot be avoided anymore). Yet the exact cause of this is the well-known
consequential disease of diabetes: neuropathy of the bladder nerves. One of the
most frequent forms of diabetic cystitis is “run-over-incontinence” which means
that the bladder can fill up unhindered and the patient does not feel the urge to go
to the toilet until high time. The permanent pull of the hollow organ can weaken
the muscle so much that the persons concerned will have to use a stomach press.
In order to avoid this, there are a number of possible tests: determination of
the remaining urine by means of ultrasound scan, urine-analysis, measurement of
the bladder’s pressure and taking minutes of urination, to name some. It is
important to mention that this nerves disorder is often irreversible which means it
cannot be cured. You can only prevent the disease by treating the diabetes
properly PRIOR TO the diagnosis.
