Diabetes and the age of puberty
|
| |
In the following, we want to deal with the age of puberty and its relation towards diabetes. Becoming an adult can be complicated without diabetes and can be even more complicated with it. Changes of the hormone balance, the first love and other factors also change the diabetes very uncontrollably.
Due to the raising distribution of sexual hormones, the insuline has less effect on the body. Since the hormone level varies, the blood sugar values are very unstable and thus regularly too high. Additionally, growth-inducing hormones make the need for insuline increase.
Another problem is the different attitude of the youths towards their surrounding. For the first time, they do not only watch things, but observe people, especially those with the other sex. Similarily, with the help of the media, they learn to pay attention on styling, dress, weight and sportif activities. Possible consequences are self-doubts. Planning the future which usually starts at the age of puberty often makes youths aware of the fact that they have to live with their disease for their whole life. This fact can very much be a problem, especially in the phase of puberty.
How parents could help their children:
-
Try to inform your child. It is the only possibility to avoid rumors. An example for such a rumor would be that impotence is a consequence from diabetes. To avoid depressions, it is very important to inform your child which can be done with the help of this homepage, for instance.
- Try to listen to your child carefully and thus avoid sorrows. You should show interest in the problems of your child, just as lovesickness or quarrels with friends, even though you judge these problems as little things.
- In case of many bad blood sugar values, you should try to avoid critic on your child, you should rather offer your help or restrict your critic on constructive advices.
- Try to understand your child and allow things. Your child wants to do new activities? Try to think like parents whose children do not have diabetes. Thus, do not use the disease as a reason to forbide things.
