Psychological aspects of children’s diabetes
|
| |
Surely type 1-diabetes is a shock to the whole family especially in cases without any
genetic predisposition which means when it is the family’s first contact with this
disease. But how do children deal with diabetes from a psychological point of view?
The thoughts about aftereffects are rather unimportant – they do not really matter in
everyday life. Often what bothers them is the dependence and the force to keep the
equipment near you all the time. Furthermore, in some cases the acceptance and
success of the diabetes therapy indicate how strong the family bonds are. Strictly
speaking, peace in the family supports a children’s ability to deal with the disease.
The other way around, it occurs that children make mistakes unconsciously in order
to indicate a lack of family bonds. Thus, high blood sugar levels become a hidden call
for more affection or family bonds.
“Normally”, psychological care should be standard. Since reality often differs
from this standard, you should talk about it with your doctor. You can find addresses
in the Yellow Pages but also at many health insurance companies. For further
