Motivation of children in dealing with diabetes

When your child gets diabetes in its early years, it´s an enormous challenge for you and your child. The adjustment and the training may seem interesting to the youngster or rather the training team tries to create it interestingly. But what happens when the everyday life continues.Even for me ,at the age of 17, it was difficult to get back into my weekday without any set-back in my therapy. In the following lines I want to tell you how you can maintain the motivation of your child so that there is no problem with returning to the everyday life.
Getting the insulin injection administered from your doctor in hospital is just one aspect. At home you have the faith of your child. If you have to syringe your child on your own, the minor ailment can develop to a big problem in your family. That´s why it is helpful to inject yourself a harmless sodium chloride solution. Even if you have a natural dislike of syringes, you have to take this step. Because the child sees at you that there is no pain from an injection and he/she registers that as a safety stimulus. The anxiety of syringes will be desensitized by watching.
For children it is also very important to get praised for their power again and again. This feedback gives them and the people around them a proof of their advances in discovering the world on their own. Example for that are shown on every ordinary summerday at playgrounds, where children are sliding for the very first time proudly, or at Christmas crafting. Yet the handling with diabetes requires very much routine, it is necessary to affirm your child in this regard.
- Though you can influence your blood sugar value definitely, it happens from time to time that you have a bad value. Make yourself and your child clear of this so that there are no feelings of guilt: life is uncalculable, also is diabetes.
- Don´t let diabetes control your everyday. Try to facilitate your proudness of your child, independent from its diabetes.
- Try to combine all actions in the diabetes management with an interesting playful action. Narrate a story for example while the changing of the catheter, a story from the “good insulin” which wanders into the body so that the body can become big and strong.
- Distract your child when a blood sugar recording is about to happen. Possibilities are e.g. holding the measurement device or panning the delay insulin ampule, if your child has an ICT.
- Very important are commendations when your child was brave, e.g. at the diabetologist or at the ocularist.
- Condition your child in a positive way: Combine unpleasent things with nice ones. You could play the favorite game of your child after every blood sugar recording or play the favorite animation cartoon for example. By this the negative actions lose the amazement quickly.
The older the child becomes, the more it will get used to the diabetes therapy until it becomes an elementary part of its life. But for this you have to build the basis in the early years of diabetes, what clearly demands great instinctive feeling. We hope that we gave you some cause for thought.
