Diabetes and ill?
|
| |
Already a little cold but also more serious diseases such as vomiting and diarrhea can cause problems when having diabetes mellitus. This site deals with questions on risks and how to deal with them. In case of illnesses also operations might be necessary as a part of the treatment. Under diabetes and surgery hints on what has to be paid attention to in such cases can be found.
Dangerous for ill diabetics is not only the illness alone, but also the fact that the metabolism often is affected.
Therefore you should meet colds with the following precautions:
- Check your blood glucose value more often than usual
- Try to stick to your normal eating habits (in case of adiposity)
- Do not give up insulin completely even if you are not able to eat something
Fever and infection
To avoid irregular blood glucose level it is important to check it more often and in case of irregularities to adjust the dosis of insulin because Fever might increase the need for insulin. You should drink a lot to compensate the loss of fluid (e.g. when perspiring). Try to drink juices of you do not feel appetite because you have to get carbohydrates. Most important thing is that your insulin level does not collapse.
Vomiting and diarrhea
Vomiting and diarrhea typically cause insufficient nutrition and therefore hypoglycemia. Therefore you should drink strongly sweetened tea (2-4 sips every 30 minutes) or you can melt dextrose under your tongue. If you just had to vomit it is useful to drink a coke (not coke light!). Maybe it is necessary to adjust your insulin rate for a short time. Please ask your doctor!
