For most people talking about their sexuality is a taboo. This is due to the force of old-fashioned stereotypes on men and women. This shy attitude gets even worse if one of the partners is chronically ill, as with diabetes for example. Therefore we want to treat this topic on this site.
Does diabetes have any impact on sexuality ?
In general: YES : Diabetes can disturb the sensible game of sexuality in various aspects:
- the psychological stress caused by the chronic disease
- the limited physical abilities
- the side effects of medication (often in case of Type-2-Diabetes)
- the changes in the blood vessels and the nerves
But: With the psychological help of the partner, family and the doctor you can at least lower the risks.
How often do impacts on the sexuality occur?
Half of all male diabetics do have problems with getting an erection. Therefore diabetes is the main cause of impaired potency.
Why do problems occur?
On the one side, the psychological incrimination of a sickness like diabetes is very high. It is not accidentally that a high number of diabetics is suffering from depression. Psychological stability is the basis of a health sexuality.
On the other side there are organic causes. The damage on nerves and vessels affects all generative organs: The swelling of the male penis or the female labium, the ejaculation or the moistening of the vagina, all this processes are regulated by blood vessels, nerves and muscles working together. If those are damaged or injured the body is not able to react on sexual stimulation, sexuality is getting difficult and in worst case painful or impossible.
Male problems ?!?

Female problems ?!?
The most frequent problems female diabetics complain on are weariness, inflammation of the vagina, less sexual desire, less moistening of the vagina and longer time to reach the orgasm.
