Diabetes and teeth
|
| |
According to statistics, for diabetics who are treated with an insulin therapy (CT,ICT,CSII) the risk of getting parodontitis is thrice as high as for non-diabetics. The biodegradation of the dental necks occurs earlier and more intensively and in the process of diabetes going on the loss of teeth is increasing.
This sounds a little bit scary but is there really a medical background to make up a relation between diabetes and parodontitis?
If parodontitis caused by bacterial infection is not treated or treated incorrectly, this can affect the metabolism of a diabetic. If diabetes is treated badly the risk of getting parodontitis is higher. In some cases it was found out that the successful treatment of parodontitis led to the lowering of the need for insulin. Who can you recognize parodontitis? The answer is simple: Healthy gum does not bleed. If the gum is bleeding this is always a sign for problems, may it be parodontitis or the beginning of gingivitis.
Can a good treatment of diabetes lower the risk?
Without a doubt this is possible. If diabetes is treated very good, it is possible to reach the risk of parodontitis of a non-diabetic.
Concerning caries, there are several things to say: especially teenagers can lower the caries-risk when their diabetes is treated properly. But it has to be mentioned that mainly the nocturnal hypoglycaemia can cause caries because if you wake up you have to take glucose or saccharine. Since especially while sleeping the salivation is lowered and cannot deal with the hasty balancing (rising) of the blood glucose (called eating *g*). So the protective function of salivation is affected.
Is my dentist able to diagnose diabetes?
It might happen that a dentist does so. Symptoms in the mouth are: tediousness, irritation of the taste, changing of the tongue.
