Tips on handling alcohol when having diabetes
|
| |
As is well known, any proper meal deserves a good wine or - to speak more generally - to every convivial meeting belongs a beer. In this respect you will get some tips on how to handle the neurotoxin alcohol.
Tips on handling alcohol when having diabetes:
- Consider the high amount of energy that alcohol contains. If you want to lose weight you better should do without.
- If you are treated with sulfonyl urea [see german lexicon] or insulin pay attention to never drink alcohol with an "empty stomach". Drinking should always go along with a carbohydrate-rich meal or snack.
- After having done sports or any other additional physical activity alcohol should be inviolable because the risk of hypoglycaemia is very high.
- Alcohol slows down your ability to react. Therefore - and because of the risk of hypoglycaemia - do not participate in traffic in any way.
- Check your blood glucose after having consumed alcohol so that you are able to balance any irregularities.
- Before going to bed after an evening you have consumed alcohol, you blood glucose should be higher than usual. (e.g. 10 instead of 6,7 mmol/l)
