Mother and child cure and diabetes

I applied for a cure for my daughter and me in spring. Upon mature consideration which cure would be suitable I decided for a traditional mother and child cure. (Although with a mother cure I would have the best chance to be able to relax I unfortunately would not have an adequate care of my child at home. A plain diabetes cure for children would possibly mean that somebody interfered with my diabetes management!) The health insurance company decided quite fast and uncomplicated. Primarily the cure was designed for psychological and psychosocial “disorders” like chronic state of exhaustion, general or family overload and/or problems as regards partnership and difficulties with the upbringing. In the beginning I did ask myself whether it was the right place to be. In fact, the institution left a good impression, was located at the Baltic Sea and was to our liking, but there was nothing to be read of diabetes but the sign that there was a diet for diabetics. When we applied for the cure we explicitly pointed out that we wanted a curing institution which had experience with diabetes.
Doesn't matter! We went to the cure and I equipped myself with everything a diabetic would need in the course of three weeks. Seen with hindsight we had a good time. We could relax mighty fine! Since my daughter still suffers from considerable fluctuations as regards her blood-sugar level and we thus can't avoid measuring at night times I eventually had to care for my child around-the-clock like I do at home. Hence, this wasn't a relief of the strain for me as still the nights were interrupted. Since at home in the evening my husband takes on the measuring and the injection for the night which then enables me to go to bed earlier I of course have been additionally “burdened” here.
Of course it was very convenient for me that I didn't have to shop nor cook for three weeks. The cooks really tried hard to satisfy us. My daughter got a packaged snack with every meal. But since they were of the opinion that diabetics are only allowed to eat diabetic products there sometimes was a lot of hue and cry. I don't know who buys and eats diabetic chocolate – we, for one find it disgusting!
I personally can't understand either why I should buy a chocolate hazelnut bar as a diabetic product which has one carbohydrate unit if the original has one carbohydrate unit as well AND tastes good. Oh well, my daughter survived it. In principle, it was just well-meant and they just didn't know better. The contact they usually have with diabetes is just limited to type II which mostly has to mind weight. The doctor left us alone most if the time – she only grumbled about the measuring at night times which was at the expense of my health. Sure, I don't stand up for my own pleasure but I'm of the opinion that it's sensible. From the doctor's point of view one could see from the urinalysis in the morning whether the values have been too high and then accordingly adjust the injection for the night. This surely is debatable. I have my own opinion there and am not particularly bent on finding my daughter with a severe hypoglycaemia with unconsciousness again in case the values are too low.
Bottom line: I can only recommend everyone to apply for a cure for oneself and one's child. Depending on how satisfied one is with one's doctor and one's own management I would either choose a plain diabetics cure or a mother and child cure. Despite small limitations it always means some relief and recovery.
