The vampire in form of an egg: Experience report OTU II

The OneTouchUltra 2 (OTU2) is one of the up-to-date blood sugar measuring devices from Lifescan. Unfortunately I just have the mg/dl version which made testing it more difficult for me because I am used to mmol/l. (According to LifeScan mmol/l can still not be delivered since the call-back)

Details in short
  • height: 7,92 x 5,72 x 2,29 cm
  • weight ca. 43 g with batteries
  • measuring range (mg/dl): 20 - 600 mg/dl [measuring range (mmol/l): 1,1 - 33,3 mmol/l]
  • test volume: 1 micro litre
  • battery: 2 lithium batteries (3V, Type "CR 2023")(one for measuring, and one for lighting)
  • measuring durance: 5sec
  • memory: 500 measuring result with date and time
  • PC-interface: yes
  • calibration: code (through adjusting)
  • flexible measuring also on forearm and palm
Optics and Fabrication

The OTU2 is small and handy and kept in silver and blue (typical for LifeScan). The form reminds a bit of an egg, just like his predecessor the OUT. The device itself does a good exterior impression it is discrete and elegant at the same time.

Key and menu control

The simple 3-key-control makes the OTU2 easy to work with. The menu is set up logical and intuitive which makes it quickly manageable and it does not take long before all the devices’ possibilities have been discovered.

OTU2 in Action

Measuring is quickly done with this device.
  • put in test strip, the device starts, check coding
  • apply blood (1 µl blood)
  • after ca. 5sec the result appears
Now it is possible to add a commentary to the result, the following are possible: (no annotation, eaten not enough, eaten too much, light exercise, heavy exercise, medicines, stress, illness, hypo feeling, menstruation, vacation, others) and/or (before meal, after meal, no annotation)
  • remove test strip

Display

The display is all right, everything is readable and thanks to the light it is also useable at the disco, cinema or other dark places.

Accessoire

Stand up aid: OneTouch UltraSoft is quite a good stand up aid and there is absolutely nothing to find fault with, but personally I prefer the one from Accu-Check.

Bag: I like the bags from LifeScan very much because of their practical orientation and they also offer the possibility to stow away other things. I find the plastic holder for the measuring device very well done, it allows for a firm and reliable grip while at the same time stabilizing the whole bag.

Batteries

2x flat button cells. Other batteries don’t fit into the device. You have to decide what you want, standard batteries or a small device. I think that the solution with a separate supply for measuring and lighting is a good idea.

Price

The OTU2 is available in a set for 40.94€ at www.Florian-Müller.de. Included in the set are:
  • measuring device (including the batteries)
  • users manual and short instruction
  • sensor test strips
  • control solution
  • lancet device
  • lancets
50 test strips cost 34.06€ (larger amounts are cheaper) As with all devices there are means and ways to get them for free from the producers or mail-order company.

Criticism

Unfortunately I have to mention the call-back of the mmol/L device, which I think is a pity. In my opinion there are no points of criticism for the device itself, it is a modern and elegant measuring device.

Conclusion

With this device you absolutely don’t have to hide in public. It is suited for young and old, it is timeless and stylish at the same time. It gets 5 out of 5 stars from me, because all around it is a good device. Hopefully the point of criticism, the call-back of the mmol/l devices, will be answered so that everybody that measures in this unit will get to enjoy this device.
