The Dresden medical doctor Rostoski is actually quite unknown. Nevertheless, he has been honoured at least twice by the president of the German Diabetes Society after the end of the Second World War: Once in the year of his death in 1962 (10th of January) and in 2002 during the opening speech at the annual conference in Dresden. Who was this unknown scientist? Raised in the Uckermark (today: Welsebruch), graduating from grammar school in Posen – today Poznan – he started to study medicine in Würzburg in 1829. Aged only 29! he finished his postdoctoral qualification there and travelled across Europe as a travelling lecturer.
In 1907 he returned to Würzburg and was appointed professor for internal medicine. In 1910 he transferred to the medical clinic of the Johannstädter hospital in Dresden, where in 1923 he founded an exemplary diabetes ambulance that caused a lot of sensation in the 1920s. In 1927 the first diabetes ward was established in the clinic. His research field was the Coma diabeticum. After the Second World War he originally wanted to focus on diabetes only and gave up on other research interests, for example his highly acclaimed occupation with lung cancer.
Nevertheless aged 80 in 1954, he was inaugurated as professor of the newly established "Carl-Gustav-Carus" academy. For two years he held this highly responsible position, and two years later at the age of 85 he withdrew from his medical work. His pupil Prof. Hans Haller discovered the metabolic syndrome.
