Tips on travels : South Africa
|
| |
The medical care in South Africa is very good - at least for us (fairly rich) tourists. It is notable that a human heart was first transplanted here.
Nevertheless, it is advisable to clarify exactly what the insurance scheme agrees to pay. For example, an additional insurance might be useful.
Food is available in a huge variety. It is not just by chance that the South African tourism industry advertises with the slogan "a world in one country". Truly, food from across the whole world, from Sushi to Falafel, Pizza, and Hamburger can be bought here.
Especially in the cities grocery store have opening hours 24 hours a day, so that one can always get something to eat. (Those who travel from South Africa to neighboring countries should better think of taking everything along. The could be more difficult there.
More than 2-3 million people that have diabetes live in South Africa. (out of 40 million inhabitants) Diabetic products are available in most of the grocery stores. Even "luxurious" foods for diabetics are available such as fat-free and saccharine-free ice cream (similar to magnum) or "Windhoek light", a Namibian beer of 2 % alcohol, brewed under the German purity requirements. "Schweppes light" is also available. Very good is also the "Weet-bix", a cereal bar that can be bought without sugar and salt. It can easily be dosed (1BE per bar).
One should be very cautious with a few refrigerators that eventually turn out to be freezers. Just this happened to me in a backpacker (youth hostel), where I was shocked to find ice crystals in my bottle of water. (I had also stored my Insulin supply for the next three months there, but fortunately in the side-door.) -and yet I had asked explicitly whether this was a refrigerator and had gotten the answer: "no problem it's ok".
This report was mailed to me by a friendly user. The E-mail address is available upon inquiry. Many thanks again from the webmaster.
