German citizens do not need a visa when entering New Zealand. However the passport must be valid for 3 months past the date of departure. In New Zealand not all medicines that are obtainable in Germany are available there. Hence it is advisable to bring all necessary medicines. Also because the local urgent pharmacies are only open until 10pm or 11pm. Furthermore the preparations must be declared, to guarantee a smooth process it is advisable to carry a copy or a confirmation from the doctor about the illness and its necessary preparations.
Diabetics should also consult the doctor before the journey and have their levels checked. He can advise them appropriately about what to pay attention to.
In New Zealand German tourists are not entitled to free medical treatment with one exception, in case of an accident. Here the Accident Compensation Scheme is put into action which covers part of the medical and hospital bill. But it is still advisable to take out a travel health insurance before starting the journey to be prepared for all possibilities.
In New Zealand going to the hospital is only possible in case of an emergency or if you have been transferred to by your general practitioner. The general practitioner is thus the first address to go to when having physical complaints. Before setting out on the journey it is therefore recommended to inform oneself about the exact locations of the general practitioner’s office in ones closer surroundings.
The emergency number is the 111 and is valid for the police, the fire service as well as for the ambulance.
