In order to enter Australia you need a valid passport and visa. The visa is issued in electronic from and must be applied for and approved before commencing the journey. The tourist visa is valid for 12 months and it entitles the owner to a 3 month stay.
At the arrival at the airport medicines that have been brought with must be declared.
Therefore it is recommended to carry a copy of the prescription or a note from the doctor in which the illness and its necessary medicine are described, in order to enter stress free.
Australia’s health care system is not free of charge for German citizens. All visits to the doctor, hospital stays and medicines must be paid for in advance. The take out of a travel health insurance is therefore absolutely advisable.
Diabetics should before starting the journey ask for permission from their doctor and get informed about possible risks or particular precautions. Furthermore it is advisable to bring along a sufficient supply of medicines. These should be kept in a thermally insulated bag as the insulin looses its strength in extreme temperatures, which are known in parts of Australia. The blood sugar levels should be checked more often than usual due to the time lag and the differences in temperature.
In case of an emergency you dial 000 this will call the ambulance, the fire service and the police.
Before starting the journey it is surely worth to make a list of doctors that are in the closer surroundings, especially when staying in rather less populated areas.
