Before travelling to Ireland one should get a European health insurance card from the health insurance scheme. It entitles to free medical treatment. However, note the following. When visiting a doctor only general practitioners that are contracted to Prime Care Reimbursement Services scheme can be contacted. If you need to go to a specialist you need the treated as a public patient referral letter from a GP.
In case of an emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for an ambulance that will take you to the nearest hospital, the treatment will then be free of charge.
Visits to the dentist are only free of charge when it is an emergency treatment and when the dentist is contracted to Local Health Office.
Before the journey it is advisable to write down a list with all registered doctors in the closer surroundings to avoid difficulties or surprises on the spot.
