Travel Tip Malta

Medical precautions for a trip to Malta should include sun protection and an update of your standard vaccinations. Depending on your particular travel plans, additional immunisation for Hepatitis A and B might be useful. Diabetics should consult their GP about further precautions. Although there are many pharmacies providing a good range of pharmaceutics, it is recommended to take your prescribed drugs with you. Usually pharmacies require you to bring a prescription from a medical practitioner and you will have to cover the full cost of your medication. Furthermore, it is useful to bring a statement of your GP at home explaining your condition and prescribed medication. On the one hand, in an emergency this makes quick help possible. On the other hand, it avoids possible problems at customs inspection or with drug squad officers. Malta’s health care system is divided into a public and a private one. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) together with your passport will entitle you to free health care service in an emergency in public hospitals and Health Care Centres. UK citizens and Northern Irish citizens do not need to produce the EHIC in a public hospital because of a bilateral agreement between the states. Since private health care can cause high cost, you should explicitly ask for public health care service. The emergency call for ambulance, police and fire brigade is 112. In an emergency the transport to hospital is free. Public hospitals for emergencies are:

St. Luke’s Hospital
Guardamangia Hill
Guardamangia, Malta
Tel: +35621241251

Gozo General Hospital
Victoria Gozo
Tel: +35621561600

Still comprehensive travel and health insurance, that will cover pre-existing conditions and evacuation to your home country if necessary, is recommended. If you plan to continue with the therapy of a pre-existing condition in Malta, you might need form E-112 of your health insurance company.
