Traveltips : Diabetes in Netherlands
|
| |
Since about 5 years a'm a suffer from diabetes. Like most of the other
expiriences I read, the beginning was pretty heavy and difficult, but now my
situation is all right. I live in Holland where the situations for diabetics
is pretty good. For dutch citizens with the correct insurance the whole
equipment is for free. We do not pay for mesure devices, electrodes,
insuline, pens etc. Besides that also the education to learn how to handle
your diabetes is mostly free of charge; especially the courses organised by
the diabetes vereniging. We have some specialised hospitals in Holland (for
instance in Bilthoven) where also all kind of courses are organised.
Also treatment for diabetes in Holland in the hospitals is pretty high
quality. We work with specialized doctors, to help you and make descisions
in the treatment, but beside them each hospital also have special nurses to
help patient with the daily things. They will give all kind of information
about treatments, the advantages and disadvantages of different treatments.
They will give all kind of information when you travel to foreign countries
and help you to make new scedules when you travel through time zones. Very
helpfull, also for foreigners. If you are in Holland and have some
questions, you might want to call or go to a hospital near you and ask for
the diabtesnurse (in dutch: diabetesverpleegkundige). He or she can give you
all the information you need or else can tell you where to go to, they know
all right adresses.
Beside the hospitals we also have the diabetesvereniging, which is a
specialized union for diabetes patients. They can help with any question or
problem that you might have and from expirience I can tell you that they are
very helpfull. (You can reach them at Phone +31 33 460566).
If you might run into some problems with insuline, you can turn to a
hospital or to a local doctor. They can help you to get the right insuline.
To get insuline you need a recepy from a doctor. With that recepy you turn
to a pharmacy where they will give you the right insuline (if not in stock,
they mostly have it at the end of the same day or early the next day) As a
foreigner I think you will have to pay in cash for the insuline. But knowing
the dutch I would say that in case of emergency, every pharmacy will give you
the insuline also without the right recepy.
At last some information about products and productinformation. In holland
you can find on basically every article an exact discription of it's
contents. The total amount of fat, the total amount of carbo-hydrates etc
mostly given per 100 gr. Very usefull if you buy new products of buy
products you haven't tried before. If you need to have a list of
carbo-hydrates in product where the amount is not on the package you might
try a hospital (the diabetesnurse). Mostly they have a long list of products
with the amount of carbo-hydrates per unit (100 gr, cup, peace etc)
I think the 'climat' for diabetics in Holland is pretty good. The
information that you can get is very clear, mostly for free and easy to
find. Besides that the hospitals, doctors and nurses are well trained,
qualified and helpfull, just like the farmacists. A nice place to
go.........;-)))
