MODY – Diabetes
|
| |
MODY - "Maturity Onset Type Diabetes in Young People" – Diabetes is often called
„children’s and youth’s type 2 diabetes“. However, from a specific scientific point of
view it is called „Diabetes mellitus type 3a“. In general, only 1 to 5 % of all diabetics
suffer from this type. It usually starts before the age of 25.
In the western industrialized countries, the number of people suffering from
this type is increasing because of their unbalanced diet, a growing lack of physical
exercise and genetic predisposition. But nevertheless, this type can occur to people
with normal weight. The recommended therapies are very inaccurate: Some MODYpatients
have to switch from oral anti-diabetic medicaments to insulin and back every
year.
J.Brückel and J. Köbberling (German Diabetes Association) call the MODY-diabetes
a form of "genetic defaults of the ß-cell-function" (Source: “Diabetes und Stoffwechsel” 11,
Suppl. 2 (2002), S.6) and not resistant to insulin, like type-2-diabetes.
