Type 1 diabetes
|
| |
Type 1 diabetes ,also known as diabetes infantil, was called "juvenile diabetes as it occurred in children and juveniles up to the age of 40. The insulin production breaks down completely. This is caused by an autoimmune response. Misled defensive corpuscles destroy the beta cells of the pancreas.
This antibodies can be found in the blood several years before diabetes is noticed because diabetes is usually recognized when more than 80 % of the beta cells have been already destroyed. The appearance of diabetes therefore is acute or subacute. Typical symptoms are loss of weight and weariness. The patient suffers from increasing thirst as the body tries to bloat the increased blood glucose. The metabolism is altogether unstable.
What is interesting is that the concordance of monozygotic twins lies between 30 to 50 %.
Type 1 diabetics are dependent on extraneous insulin for all their life. Otherwise they will surely die.
Only five per cent of all diabetics belong to this "type".
