How to behave while on Vacation
|
| |
- During sunbathing, the blood circulation rises causing the insulin to pass faster into the blood stream. Therefore, while relaxing in the sun, or being exposed to strong heat, please pay attention to the symptoms of low blood sugar level.
- When the opposite is the case (in cold weather during, for example, winter vacation) the blood circulation slows down. Especially then it is always important to wear warm clothes (dress warm).
- Since the types of insulin still vary internationally, inform yourself ahead of travelling, about the kinds of insulin and their names that will be available.
- Diarrhea, for example, caused by extraordinary food, can lead to a low blood sugar level and to a loss of fluids. In an emergency situation it is therefore best to drink a lot of sweetened black tea and eat emergency BE's, such as bananas.
- Before setting off on a journey, it is best to write down a few "emergency-sentences" in the native language of the particular country, like for example: "Help! I am a diabetic and need a doctor / sugar..."
- When storing insulin in coolers or in refrigerators, first let it cool down to room temperature, otherwise the injection may be very painful. Likewise, insulin cannot be stored at temperatures below the freezing point because then it cannot be used any longer.
- Keep in mind that you move more or less than usual and adjust your dose of insulin.
- If you got a stylus save it from sand. Simple plastic bags can be helpful here.
- At the CT you have to take account of snacks: Think of possible delays as
losing one's way in foreign cities etc. and make sure you have auxiliary BE's
with you.
